What is Test Automation

Test Automation is the effort to automate the test cases/scenarios that are used to validate a system. It is often desirable to target the test cases that are a part of the regression test suite and run on regular basis. While the methodical implementation of the Automation Test Suite makes life a lot easier for the QA team as well as the business by reducing cost, investment, and increasing productivity, a not-so-well implemented Automation Test Suite can negate that gain and may even increase cost and reduce productivity.

Why Automate

Quality Assurance (QA) is a critical step in software life cycle. It is often the last step before a product/functionality is deployed to production. At the same time, a majority of the QA functions are repetitive. The job can get boring at times and issues might get overlooked. Also, QA team is most effective when they can devote proper time test planning and executing test cases against the new functionalities rather than worrying about the regression impact. This is where Automated Testing comes into the picture. If properly implemented, it can relieve the QA team from the continuously increasing burden of regression testing and also provides faster results.
